Orlando Cepeda among Jewish Sports Hall of Fame honorees

Orlando Cepeda isn’t Jewish — “I’m Puerto Rican!” he said with a chuckle by phone — but the Giants’ Hall of Famer is going into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame of Northern California on Saturday evening.

Cepeda, 80, counts many in the local Jewish community among his closest friends, including Bob Sokolov, who is one of the partners in the Giants’ ownership group. Sokolov’s father-in-law, Bill Moskovitz, was one of Cepeda’s best friends going back to the 1950s.

“This is a huge honor for me,” Cepeda said. “I have so many great friends who are Jewish people, I can’t wait.
