Former San Francisco Giants prospect Eric Surkamp will take the mound for the Oakland Athletics on Thursday, starting the first game of the Cactus League for the A’s.
Surkamp, who signed a minor league deal with the Athletics on Dec. 4, is someone that the A’s will be taking at least a brief look at this spring. The San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser reported that the left-hander added a cutter to his repertoire, which is why Oakland feels he may have a chance to impact the big league club at some point.
The A’s are Surkamp’s fourth team, after being drafted in the sixth round of the 2008 draft by the Giants.
