The Oakland A’s placed catcher Josh Phegley on paternity leave, the team announced Wednesday. To replace him on the roster, catcher Ryan Lavarnway was called up from Triple-A Nashville.
The rules for the MLB paternity list dictate that Phegley must miss at least the next game (i.e., Wednesday afternoon), but not more than three games. Therefore, he will be back on the roster no later than Saturday against the Mariners.
As for Lavarnway, this will be his first stint in the bigs for the A’s. The 29-year-old, who hasn’t played in MLB since 2015, was signed as a minor league free agent last winter and has spent all season in Nashville.
