The Oakland A’s called up pitcher Frankie Montas on Thursday, the team announced. The right-hander will start the evening’s game against the Mariners. They also called up reliever J.B. Wendelken. To make room on the roster, reliever Ryan Dull and outfielder Nick Martini were optioned to Triple-A Nashville.
The A’s rotation has been slammed by injuries all season, and the bug hit them once again over the last week. Both Sean Manaea and Brett Anderson went on the disabled list in the span of three days, leaving a gaping hole to be filled. Fortunately, Oakland had some depth ready for such an emergency, and Montas is a big part of that contingency plan.
