Notes: Wendelken appears headed for Tommy John surgery

OAKLAND — A’s reliever J.B. Wendelken is facing a likely Tommy John surgery pending the results of a second medical opinion, manager Bob Melvin said.

Wendelken, 23, has spent four different stints in the A’s major league bullpen this season and has posted a 9.95 ERA in eight appearances, without a decision. He was acquired from the White Sox in December along with minor league lefty Zach Erwin for Brett Lawrie. Wendelken last pitched Thursday at Kansas City.
