MESA, Ariz. — It’s been a thoroughly rotten spring for Sonny Gray. The A’s pitcher not only still can’t throw a baseball do a lat strain, he’s ending his days this week by watching the USA team deliver so much drama in the World Baseball Classic.
Gray was picked to pitch for the team in January, but was knocked out of the event when he was denied insurance coverage to participate due to the extended time he spent on the disabled list last year.
His injury this spring made his non-participation academic, but he has followed the U.
