Moneyball 2.0? How A’s lights-out bullpen can save a crumbling rotation

OAKLAND — Because he is baseball’s Magellan, having circumnavigated all six divisions, it’s rare for Edwin Jackson to encounter something new. But not even Old Man Jackson can remember anything quite like the A’s ridiculously deep bullpen.

“I don’t think I’ve been in a situation where we’ve had, legitimately, four closers,” he said.

The A’s are the only team in the majors that has not lost when leading after seven innings. (They’re 56-0.) The relievers are saving the season, too, now that injuries have left the A’s with the makings of a last-place rotation.

The A’s are so top-heavy on the back end that they’re tilting the game on its head again.
