Khris Davis, named the AL Player of the Week one day earlier, was scratched from Oakland’s lineup with a stomach ailment Tuesday.
Davis had hoped to play, manager Bob Melvin said, but wasn’t recovered enough Tuesday afternoon to stay in the lineup. Danny Valencia took his spot and will bat cleanup and play right vs. the Astros, with Jake Smolinski moving from right to left in Davis’ absence.
Davis hit five homers last week and has 40 for the season, most by an A’s player since Jason Giambi hit 43 in 2000.
