Former A’s and Giants pitcher dies at 62; figured in key games for both teams

Chances are you hadn’t considered Scott Sanderson recently.

Sanderson, a pitcher on seven major league teams over 19 seasons, died Thursday at age 62, multiple media outlets reported. The cause of death has not been released.

Chances are you would be surprised if you made a full accounting of Sanderson’s career. He won enough games (163) to fill a full season. He pitched in the postseason for the Montreal Expos and the Chicago Cubs. He was an All-Star for the George Steinbrenner Yankees.

Of parochial interest, Sanderson pitched for both Bay Area teams. He had his triumphs with the A’s and Giants, and found himself a bit player in two of the most disappointing games we’ve ever known.
