Danny Valencia to stick with A’s rest of way

Danny Valenica, whose roster spot was iffy two days ago in the wake of Billy Butler’s release and with more September callups looming, will remain with the A’s the rest of the season, sources confirmed Tuesday.

Valencia has been one of Oakland’s top offensive contributors all season, but he struggled defensively at third base, eventually losing the position to rookie Ryon Healy. A clubhouse altercation with Butler in August landed Butler on the concussion list; both men were fined between $5,000-$10,000 for the incident.

Valencia, now primarily playing right field, remains under club control for next season, but with the A’s citing their youth movement for Butler’s release and with decreased playing time for some veterans, it is unlikely that he returns, particularly after the fight with Butler.
