HOUSTON - While the A’s await news on starter Sean Manaea, Daniel Mengden has rejoined the team and he might wind up starting in the spot left vacant when Manaea went on the disabled list Sunday.
Manaea felt discomfort in his left shoulder while playing catch before Oakland’s game at Minnesota and he flew back to the Bay Area on Monday so had yet to be seen by team doctors, according to manager Bob Melvin. The extent of the injury is unknown.
So for the first time since he was in rookie ball - with the Astros - Mengden will be in the bullpen for the series against Houston, but if he’s not used, he is likely to start Thursday against the Mariners at the Coliseum.
