OAKLAND -- A's manager Bob Melvin has alluded to the "Khris Davis effect" multiple times since his star slugger landed on the disabled list last week.
Oakland's offense has done little without him -- but just enough on occasion.
That wasn't the case Monday in a 1-0 series-opening loss to the Rays, who struck for three straight hits with two outs in the 13th inning against righty Chris Hatcher. Mallex Smith's RBI single produced the game's lone run.
Prior to the inning, the Rays had not recorded a hit since the sixth.
