With both his slider and splitter working, Tanaka (5-4) was able to bounce back from what the right-hander called the roughest two-start stretch of his career. Allowing one run in 7 1/3 innings, Tanaka left to a standing ovation from the crowd of 39,044. He generated a career-high 25 swings and misses over his 111 pitches, limiting Oakland to just five hits without a walk.
As impressive as Tanaka was, Manaea matched him, limiting New York to four hits -- three singles and a double -- and a walk, striking out eight over seven scoreless.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Clipped: Third baseman Chase Headley kept the game scoreless in the eighth by throwing out Adam Rosales at the plate on a fielder's choice, bailing out Clippard after a two-base throwing error, but that reprieve was short-lived.
