OAKLAND — Fernando Rodney no longer is the oldest player in the majors.
Rodney, 42, was designated for assignment by the A’s before Saturday’s game. Left-handed pitcher Wei-Chung Wang was promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Rodney, a key figure in the bullpen after acquired last August from Detroit, had pitched to a 9.42 ERA this season. More alarming, opponents were batting .345 against him.
His 325 saves rank 18th in history. His 913 appearances rank 23rd.
Wang, who was with the A’s this spring as a non-roster invitee, was 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA in 16 relief appearances for Las Vegas.
