OAKLAND — Hours after the A’s said they want to build a new stadium near Laney College, Mayor Libby Schaaf acknowledged there is work to be done to ensure residents in Chinatown and nearby neighborhoods aren’t displaced.
Mayor Schaaf applauded the A’s for self-financing their own stadium but said the team has “their work cut out for them.”
Already, residents and activists from the Eastlake, Chinatown and San Antonio neighborhoods have expressed worry that some of the city’s most vulnerable residents might be pushed out if a stadium is built there. The population of each of those neighborhoods is predominantly Asian, with many non-English speakers and renters.
