With a bullpen left depleted by a trip’s worth of short outings from the rotation, the A’s called up two pitchers Thursday - Frankie Montas, to start the game, and reliever J.D. Wendelken, leaving manager Bob Melvin with just two bench players.
The A’s are expected to recall outfielder Dustin Fowler for Friday’s game against Seattle. Fowler, who is batting .382 since being sent down Aug. 3, was removed from Triple-A Nashville’s game after one at-bat Thursday.
Ryan Dull, who worked two scoreless innings Wednesday at Houston, was sent down, but he will be back Tuesday after Triple-A Nashville’s season, as will outfielder Nick Martini, also demoted Thursday.
