BALTIMORE — At long last, Boog Powell, the A’s rookie outfielder, met Boog Powell, the 1970 American League MVP.
The elder Powell, 76, invited Oakland’s Boog out to Boog’s Barbecue beyond the right-field wall at Camden Yards on Tuesday to sample his famous fare.
The younger Powell, 24, hit his first big-league homer Monday night, almost hitting the barbecue stand. His given name is Herschel Mack Powell IV, but he’s been known as “Boog” since he was 5 or 6 to differentiate him from his father and grandfather. He’s always wanted to meet the elder Boog Powell, who is no relation, and said he always hoped it happened at Camden Yards.
