A’s rookie Boog Powell ventured out to the concourse before the game to chat with his idol of sorts, former Orioles slugger John “Boog” Powell.
The 24-year-old outfielder met the 1970 AL MVP at Boog’s BBQ.
“It was unreal. I never thought this day would come,” the younger Powell said. “I always told myself I’d meet him here playing in the big leagues, going to his barbeque. And it actually happened. It was incredible.”
The 76-year-old Powell has been selling barbeque and signing autographs from the concession stand since Oriole Park was built in 1992.
“I’m honored that you’ve been carrying my name for all these years, ” the elder Powell said with a laugh.
