Henderson Alvarez will undergo a second surgery on his right shoulder next week, continuing the difficult road back to health for a pitcher the A’s had high hopes for this season.
Manager Bob Melvin told reporters in Kansas City that Alvarez will undergo arthroscopic surgery with Dr. James Andrews, who performed Alvarez’s original shoulder surgery in July 2015 while he was still with the Miami Marlins. The A’s signed Alvarez to a $4.25 million deal before this season, viewing that as a relatively low-cost gamble on a 26-year-old one-time All-Star who still has plenty of upside if healthy.
