OAKLAND — Yusmeiro Petit, the A’s most dependable relief pitcher this season, is honoring his late father with a display of work ethic above and beyond what anyone should expect.
Alberto Petit, 65, died of a heart attack on Thursday in Venezuela, prompting Yusmeiro to spend two days away from the team while sorting out his next move.
He ultimately decided to remain with the A’s rather than return home, partly because travel logistics were going to be difficult, but mostly because he believes that’s what his dad would have wanted.
“Obviously, work is very important to him,” Petit said before Sunday’s game against the Detroit Tigers.
