MESA, Ariz. -- A's reliever R.J. Alvarez will have arthroscopic surgery to remove bone chips from his right elbow, manager Bob Melvin announced Friday.
There's no exact timetable for his recovery, but Melvin said Alvarez would have the surgery in the next couple days back in the Bay Area with Dr. Jon Dickinson.
Melvin said Alvarez's elbow first began bothering him after his second spring outing.
The right-hander has a 14.73 ERA over four Cactus League appearances.
