A’s, playing under protest, fall to Astros in 10 innings

The A’s already were playing Tuesday’s game under protest after a disputed call in the third inning, then the final results weren’t much to their liking, either.

The Astros got a tremendous performance from reliever Chris Devenski, who retired all 11 men he faced, and Houston cobbled together a run in the 10th against Sean Doolittle to beat Oakland 2-1 at the Coliseum.

Oakland loaded the bases against Astros closer Ken Giles with one out in the bottom of the inning, but Jake Smolinski popped up and Joey Wendle struck out to end the game.
