OAKLAND – The A’s added to their outfield depth once again by claiming Jake Smolinski off waivers Sunday from the Texas Rangers.
Smolinski, 26, was optioned to Triple-A Nashville, where he joins another recently acquired right-handed hitting outfielder, Dayan Viciedo, on the Sounds’ roster. Viciedo was signed to a minor league deal June 12.
Smolinski hit .133 with one home run and six RBI in 35 games this season over three stints with Texas before he was designated for assignment Friday. He made his big league debut last season and hit .349 in 24 games.
A second-round draft pick of Washington’s in 2007, Smolinksi spent seven-plus seasons in the minors before breaking into the bigs.
