A's not allowing pitcher Henderson Alvarez to throw

Noted physician Dr. James Andrews has not yet been able to examine the MRI of right-hander Henderson Alvarez's surgically repaired right shoulder, according to trainer Nick Paparesta.

The A's are thus taking a cautious approach with Alvarez, who felt soreness in his shoulder in his most recent minor league rehab appearance."He's doing much better," Paparesta said. "His strength is good. His range of motion is good. He's been doing his shoulder strength exercises. But we're going to hold off on him throwing until Dr. Andrews can have a peek at that MRI."

  • The A's have 12 players on the disabled list -- so many that one reporter joked to A's manager Bob Melvin that he might need to go to medical school to learn how to describe all of those injuries in detail.
