A’s Matt Chapman still receiving IV treatment for knee

CHICAGO - Matt Chapman remained hospitalized for a third night in a row Friday, but manager Bob Melvin said the rookie third baseman is responding to IV antibiotic treatment for a left knee infection.

“He’s making some progress,” said Melvin, who believes Chapman will be released Saturday.

Chapman is eligible to come off the disabled list Thursday and the A’s remain hopeful he’ll be cleared to play by then. The source of Chapman’s infection is unknown; position players often have scrapes from diving for balls and from sliding into bases, plus Chapman was cut while colliding with a fence recently.
