MESA, Ariz. — A’s manager Bob Melvin isn’t completely dismissive of the idea of some day using a robotic strike zone, but he has one major issue: how is he going to get himself ejected?
Any thought of using a a robot or computer program to eventually call balls and strikes at the major league level is certainly a ways off and likely still a long shot of ever happening. Former A’s outfielder Eric Byrnes is one of the biggest supporters of using such a system, which is enough to make Melvin pause.
“If Eric Byrnes is all for it, then I tend to want to be able to take a look at it,” Melvin said.
