OAKLAND — Few people in baseball are having a better offseason than the one Bob Melvin is currently going through.
Just a couple of weeks after the manager received a contract extension to keep him locked down with the A’s through at least the 2021 season, Tuesday afternoon brought him a more personal reward — AL Manager of the Year.
Melvin received the most votes for the award given out by Baseball Writers’ Association of America, finishing ahead of Boston’s Alex Cora and Tampa Bay’s Kevin Cash.
It’s Melvin’s third time winning the award, tied with Cubs manager Joe Maddon for the most among active major league managers.
