OAKLAND — Left-hander Sean Manaea, the toast of baseball in April, is looking to start with a clean slate in June.
He finished with a 1-4 record and 7.11 earned run average, and said Wednesday night he was thinking too much on the mound.
Which begs the question: How do you fix problems without thinking about them?
Athletics manager Bob Melvin believes the solution is working the problem between starts, then getting back to being relaxed and focused when the game starts.
“Anything you do in preparation, whether you’re taking batting practice, throwing a side, you’re always trying to get better,” Melvin said before the A’s closed out their 10-game homestand against the Tampa Bay Rays.
