A's fire Gallego, install Washington as third base coach

The Oakland A’s have named Ron Washington third base coach for the remainder of the season, the team announced on Monday. Mike Gallego has been relieved of his duties.

Washington returned to the A’s May 21 of this year as a major league coach after managing the Texas Rangers for nearly eight seasons from 2007-14. He compiled a 664-611 record and guided the Rangers to back-to-back World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011. The Rangers posted four consecutive 90-win seasons from 2010-13 but were 53-87 when he resigned Sept. 5, 2014. The 63-year-old Washington has more wins than any other manager in Texas/Washington franchise history.
