HOUSTON - Steve Scarsone has coached third base plenty; minor-league managers man that post during games, and Scarsone spent 10 years as a minor-league manager, including four with the A’s Triple-A club.
Filling in at the major-league level is new, though, and Scarsone is still learning opponents’ arm strength, along with the baserunning quirks of the A’s players.
Since assuming the job on June 15 when bench coach Mark Kotsay went on leave to attend to his young daughter’s eye injury, Scarsone has made two decisions that he has rehashed: Chad Pinder was thrown out on a sensational relay throw by Houston’s Carlos Correa on June 19, and Sunday at Chicago, Scarsone held up Adam Rosales at third on Jed Lowrie’s double to right.
