A’s designate team leader Stephen Vogt for assignment

It’s a shakeup kind of month for the A’s, and Thursday came the biggest shocker to date: Oakland designated longtime catcher Stephen Vogt for assignment.

Vogt, a two-time All-Star and a fan favorite, was the undisputed team leader, but he was batting .217 with four homers and 20 RBIs in 54 games. He had started just one game on the current eight-game homestand behind the plate.

The A’s have 10 days in which to waive, trade or release Vogt. The trade market is thought to be slim, so there is some chance should Vogt go unclaimed that the team might be able to offer him a minor-league job.
