OAKLAND — A’s closer Santiago Casilla has had a rough month of July that has seen him blow three of his five save opportunities, with his most recent chance perhaps the most disastrous of them all.
Entering the ninth with a 2-0 lead over the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, Casilla’s meltdown ended by allowing a game-tying two-run home run to Justin Smoak and a walk-off home run to Kendrys Morales on the very next pitch.
With another save opportunity after leading by a run the next day, manager Bob Melvin opted to go with Blake Treinen, who also blew the save chance in an eventual 8-4 loss.
