ANAHEIM -- Newly acquired catcher Dustin Garneau, claimed off waivers from the Rockies, was assigned to the A's roster on Saturday, while Ryan Lavarnway was designated for assignment.
Garneau replaced Lavarnway as the A's backup catcher. Lavarnway had appeared in six games for Oakland, batting .273 with a double. Manager Bob Melvin inserted Garneau, a right-handed hitter, into Saturday night's lineup to face A's lefty Paul Blackburn.
Garneau, 29, made the Rockies' Opening Day roster but was optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque after hitting .206 with a homer and six RBIs in 22 games.
