Alvarez's hopes for '16 quashed by another setback

OAKLAND -- Right-hander Henderson Alvarez's hopes of pitching this season have been quashed by yet another setback.

The A's signed the 2014 All-Star pitcher to a one-year deal last winter, anticipating his return from shoulder surgery as soon as May. Three setbacks later, they're faced with the reality that he won't throw a single pitch for them by the time the season closes.

A's manager Bob Melvin said Alvarez, who made a third go at a Minor League rehab assignment last week, is planning a visit with Dr. James Andrews. A second shoulder surgery could potentially be considered, though multiple MRIs have revealed no structural damage.
