The City of San Jose's bid to bring the Oakland A's to the Silicon Valley may not exactly be over, but it was at least crippled considerably when a federal appeals court struck down the city's lawsuit directly challenging Major League Baseball's antitrust status.
Per a San Francisco Chronicle report, "San Jose had tried to break this stalemate with a lawsuit challenging baseball’s 93-year-old exemption from antitrust laws. That legal challenge went from long shot to pipe dream Thursday when a federal appeals court panel ruled that the exemption, while “one of federal law’s most enduring anomalies,” could only be overturned by an action of Congress or ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court."
The winner, for now, appears to be the San Francisco Giants who keep their claim on the territorial rights to Santa Clara Country. While it's possible (and perhaps likely) that this will be taken to the U.S Supreme Court for a look, the A's are likely to remain an Oakland fixture unless another city can bid them away down the road.
