The Notre Dame defense has taken a lot of heat this season, and rightfully so.
Tough starts, communication breakdowns, 19 explosive plays allowed of 20 yards or more — including 11 of at least 30 yards — have created plenty of questions and skepticism surrounding this unit.
But through all the confusion and criticism, it’s hard to ignore that this Irish defense has been fabulous in the second half when the game is most on the line.
This was especially true last weekend against USC when the Notre Dame defense held the Trojans scoreless during the final 27-plus minutes of the game, helping the Irish offense to score 17 straight points in a 41-31 win.
