With the second spot in the Big Ten standings on the line, the Irish hosted the Nittany Lions in South Bend Friday. Notre Dame started the last series of the regular season in style with a 5-4 overtime win against Penn State.
The Irish offense recognized the urgency early on, surpassing the Nittany Lions’ shots on goal from the start. Irish forward Jake Pivonka appeared to give the Irish the lead with the first goal of the game, but a dispute from Penn State head coach Guy Gadowsky claiming too many men on the ice reversed the period’s direction.
