Payne suffered the injury during Notre Dame’s spring Blue-Gold football game after carrying the ball 10 times for 58 yards.
The rising junior carried the ball 45 times for 168 yards and 2 touchdowns. Payne carved out a role on the team as a third down back, and had more carries on 3rd down than any other Irish back in 2023 — even Audric Estime.
