Joe Schmidt found himself right in his element Saturday against Georgia Tech, though he was probably plenty apprehensive in that place at the same time.
As Notre Dame’s starting middle linebacker, Schmidt in his role against the triple-option offenses of the Yellow Jackets last weekend and Navy in a couple of weeks, provide plenty of opportunities to make plays, and plenty of other opportunities to sustain injury.
Schmidt learned the hard way against Navy last year that cut blocks and sneak attacks in this style of offense can wreak havoc on the knees and ankles of a defensive front seven after he was lost for the last five-plus games of the season with a fractured fibula and ankle.
