Meinhardt was the youngest U.S. Olympic fencer ever when he made the team in 2008, but eight years later, he entered Rio with the intention of retiring after one last run at a medal, or maybe two.
Those hopes were dealt a blow Sunday, as Meinhardt fell narrowly in the quarterfinals of the men’s individual foil, a round short of the chance to win a medal.
Still, the U.S. has not traditionally had success in the men’s foil, and Meinhardt’s performance was met with praise from his teammates and coaches.
Super proud of @GerekMeinhardt for his top8.
