With the Opening Ceremonies still officially two days away, the 2016 Olympics got off to a quiet start Wednesday with the first few matches of the women’s soccer tournament.
Tancredi, who graduated from ND in 2005 and won a national championship with the Irish in 2004, entered the tourney looking to improve upon the bronze medal she earned four years ago in London, but slowed by an ankle injury she suffered in a tune-up game against China.
As it turned out, the Canadians barely needed the striker in their opener, as they scored the fastest goal in Olympic history, just 20 seconds into the match against Australia, and then went down to 10 players after an egregious red card in the 19th minute, also an Olympic record.
