Speaking from a pragmatic standpoint, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly did exactly what he needed to when he announced that the quarterback competition between fifth-year senior Everett Golson and redshirt junior Malik Zaire wouldn’t be settled in the spring and would spill through the summer and into fall camp.
Much of the ND fan base was hoping for closure and an announcement sometime before the Blue-Gold Game Saturday, but 15 spring practices will not provide Kelly and his staff the necessary data to make such an important decision. And frankly, what sense would it make for Kelly to declare a starter now?
