The No. 9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish couldn't have started their season much better than cruising to a blowout 38-3 win over the Texas Longhorns. The Virginia Cavaliers lost their season opener to UCLA, 34-16. Will Notre Dame improve to 2-0? Or will Virginia bounce back for a much-needed win? Here's our game preview and prediction.
Virginia Outlook:
Virginia tried to run the ball against UCLA, but picked up only 98 yards on 34 yards. The secondary, despite having a stud in Quin Blanding, struggled mightily against the Bruins. UCLA threw for 351 yards and three scores. Playing at home could help Virginia improve its performance, but Notre Dame has a strong passing attack.
Notre Dame Outlook:
Malik Zaire looked like a Heisman contender against Texas. He should only improve as the season goes on. The defense shut down Texas too. Sure, Notre Dame lost RB Tarean Folston, but C.J. Prosise filled in just fine. The Fighting Irish have the look of a dangerous team this season, provided they stay healthy.
What To Watch For: Virginia Pass Rush
The Cavaliers struggled getting to the QB against UCLA, recording only one sack. Notre Dame's pass protection was great against Texas, allowing just one sack. If Virginia can't get pressure against Notre Dame, the Fighting Irish will cruise to another win.
Prediction: Notre Dame wins 38-10
I'm a believer in Notre Dame this season. Virginia has a little bit more success than Texas did, but it's another easy win for the Fighting Irish. The Cavaliers won't get much pressure and Malik Zaire has another big game to boost his Heisman campaign.
