The Irish got off to a blazing start, with a 45-yard run from Amir Carlisle setting up the Irish deep inside Owls territory on the game's first series. A Tommy Rees strike to DaVaris Daniels put Notre Dame up 7-0 after a drive that took less than a minute and a half.
The Irish D came out with similar intensity, forcing a three-and-out on Temple's first possession. When Rees got the ball back at his own 13-yard-line, he took a shot downfield to TJ Jones on first down that ended up a 51-yard gain.
After a run from George Atkinson III, Rees connected with Daniels once again for a second 32-yard touchdown in the game's first five minutes. The Irish put up 14 points with just 2 minutes and 27 seconds of possession.
As Temple's shell shock wore off, the rest of the quarter was less explosive. Both teams traded field position, and Temple finally engineered a drive into Irish territory at the end of the quarter. As the first quarter expired, Temple's kicker whiffed on a 32-yard field goal attempt, leaving the Irish up by two touchdowns.
