Earlier this week, the Wall Street Journal published an article about how the real No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup of the weekend was Notre Dame vs. Wake Forest. Based on BCS rankings? Not quite. It takes a little creativity to come up with the measurement for this one. Think graduation success rate. Notre Dame ranks No. 1 and Wake Forest is No. 2. That’s exactly the ranking after the outcome of this game too.
With that in mind, it only seems fitting to judge this week’s Irish road test against the Demon Deacons on ND’s GPA scale.
A 4.0 Winning 24-17 to become bowl eligible.
A- 3.667 Passing a road test against another 5-3 team.
B+ 3.333 Scoring 14 unanswered points in the second half.
B 3.0 Our offensive line’s performance. They created openings for Cierre Wood and Jonas Gray, as well as gave Tommy Rees plenty of time to make decisions.
B- 2.667 Our receivers were efficient against the Demon Deacons. Eifert and Floyd each came up with a touchdown; however, they only had a combined 104 yards.
C 2.0 Defense allowing 17 points in the first half.
C- 1.667 Going into halftime down by seven.
D 1.0 Tommy Rees’ two interceptions
F 0 North Carolina was a hike for most students to get to…if only the game was a little closer to home so that more of us could’ve been there.
Extra Credit Facts:
- Wake Forest is the 141st different opponent in Notre Dame Football history. When facing opponents for the first time, our record is now 118-20-3.
- Following our victory at Wake Forest, Notre Dame Football has now won 18 straight road matchups against first-time opponents since 1921.
- A Brian Kelly-coached team has not lost a game in the month of November since 2007 during his first season at Cincinnati.
Overall grade for this matchup: A. Now we’re all looking forward to next week’s road test against Maryland at FEDEX Field outside of Washington D.C.
