Following day one of the 2016 Masters, Matt Fitzpatrick has put himself in a great position to make the cut. The Northwestern product is tied for 13th overall and shot a 71, good for 1-under on the day. He trails the leader Jordan Spieth by five strokes.
Last year's cut was at 2-over, so if Fitzpatrick can put together another solid, mistake-free day, he will likely be playing this weekend.
It's hard not to have high expectations for Fitzpatrick after his Round 1 performance. Tomorrow will be a decisive day for the former Northwestern Wildcat — he spent one quarter at NU — with the ability to vault himself into the top 10 or fade off, perhaps even missing the cut.
