In early 2014, Northwestern football made waves around the college athletics landscape when they began an effort to unionize. Today, the National Labor Relations Board made a ruling on the players’ case, and it isn’t a great one for them. The NLRB unanimously declined jurisdiction in the case, the board announced today:
In a unanimous decision, the National Labor Board declined to assert jurisdiction in the case involving Northwestern University football players who receive grant-in-aid scholarships. The Board did not determine if the players were statutory employees under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA).
