The Northern Iowa athletic department is back in the black.
Data released Thursday from USA Today’s annual comprehensive financial report of athletic department spending at public universities shows a UNI athletics surplus of $1.12 million for the 2016-17 academic year.
UNI had a total operating revenue last year of $19,497,119, while spending $18,375,024. That surplus is a flip from the 2015-16 academic year, when the Panthers suffered a deficit of $765,333.
UNI’s revenue and expense figures for last year both ranked fourth among the Missouri Valley Conference’s six public schools, which included former member Wichita State during the 2016-17 year.
