AMES, Ia. — A third-and-11 late in the second quarter on Saturday night showcased everything good and frustrating about Northern Iowa quarterback Aaron Bailey.
After taking the snap, Bailey stepped back to pass. Iowa State’s pass rush invaded the pocket, forcing Bailey out and into open field. The 6-foot-2, 222-pound senior took off for a 9-yard gain. He was met by cornerback Brian Peavy, who saw that Bailey didn’t tuck the ball, and promptly forced a fumble.
The play contained it all — excellent playmaking ability, followed by questionable decision making. Bailey put both those traits on display during the Panthers’ season-opening win over the Cyclones, a 25-20 aesthetically displeasing contest, inside Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday night.
