Just hours after announcing several cost-saving measures to help offset expected budget shortages caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Northern Iowa athletics appears to be taking another financial blow.
As a result of the Big Ten’s Thursday announcement that all fall sports will have conference-only schedules amid the coronavirus pandemic, UNI football’s Sept. 5 season-opener at Iowa will not happen. The Panthers were set to receive $650,000 for playing that game.
"We are extremely disappointed that the Big Ten has chosen to compete in conference only games this fall, UNI athletics director David Harris said in a release.
